Writing A Cover Letter
Whether you are on the hunt for your dream job or it’s a requirement in your coursework, cover letters are incredibly important.
They are one of your best tools to show your dream company that YOU are the best fit for the job you want.
But cover letters can be incredibly frustrating to write when you don’t know where to start.
Not only that, but sometimes computer algorithms might decide your cover letter isn’t worth reading, and your application won’t even see the light of day!
Knowing how to write an AWESOME cover letter is a critical skill for college students, and the more you do it, the better you get!
My 4 Biggest Tips For Writing A Cover Letter:
- Make the salutation (greeting) SPECIFIC. Do your research to find out who might be reading your cover letter. If you know who this person is, double check that you spell their name correctly. If you don’t know or can’t find the name of the person, address the letter “Dear Hiring Manager” or “Dear Hiring Team”. Avoid using “To whom it may concern”.
- PERSONALIZE your cover letter. You don’t have to reinvent the wheel every time you apply for a job, but put in the work to be sure that your cover letter is UNIQUE to each company and job you apply for.
- Be DIRECT in stating who you are and what you can do. Now is NOT the time to be modest. If you are organized and driven, say it! If you have extensive experience working in tree frog capturing, tell the company in your cover letter that your experience in this area will make you an excellent candidate for their open job position of “tree frog capturing specialist”.
- RESEARCH company mission and values. Use THEIR words in your cover letter. Does the company’s mission involve “embodying environmental, social, and fiscal sustainability”? Say how much YOU prioritize these values and how your passion for this mission makes you an excellent candidate for the job..
