The Nutrition Starting Line and Making Change

The Nutrition Starting Line And Making Change

Hello! Welcome to Feed That Nation!

My name is Natalie Nation. I am a grad student, future RD, educator, content creator, and mac and cheese expert! I love talking about college and health issues to help college students to be more successful, confident, and healthy!

In this episode of Feed That Nation, I’m talking about the nutrition “starting line” and the first steps to making positive change!

When people find out that I study nutrition, I get hit up for advice everywhere from the dentist office to the dance floor. And that’s awesome! I love having conversations with curious people.

The most common question I get asked is usually along the lines of “I want to be healthy. Where do I start?”

In this episode, I talk about what I’ve learned about getting started with making positive lifestyle change, discuss the steps to success, and talk about what people REALLY want to know when they’re asking “What should I eat?”

I am not kidding when I say that I’ve been asked about nutrition in the strangest places! Bus drivers, dentists, dance partners…everyone is so curious about nutrition! And that’s great, because I love talking about nutrition!

Both in my work with the Madison Scouts and in casual conversations with family members, friends, and complete strangers, I’ve been asked a lot of things over the past few years.

One of the most common conversations I have usually starts with the other person saying that they know they aren’t always healthy, they’d like to make a change, but they don’t know where to start.

And I don’t blame them!

There is so much information (and misinformation!) available; every website and social media page has different advice, even about the same topics.

It’s hard to know what to trust, how to apply what you’ve learned, and how to make positive health choices that will actually stick.

I also talk a little in this podcast episode about the “magic” answers. People, either intentionally or subconsciously, want to know what the easiest, lowest difficult, least effort things are that will make them look or feel the way they want to.

(Or the way they THINK they want to…but that’s another podcast episode entirely).

I don’t shame anyone when I say this—I do it too! It’s easy to wish for a magic answer, a quick fix. It’s hard to want to put in the work that it takes to truly make positive healthful change.
